60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland
Updates and Corrections to the Third Edition
General Remark: The Mount Hood Info Center no longer exists, except in two places: by phone (503-622-4822) and online at MtHood.info. For the most up-to-date hiking conditions information, I recommend PortlandHikers.org.
Page 46, McCall Preserve: No dogs allowed.
Page 57, Wahkeena/Multnomah: Ignore the “special comments,” which is a typo.
Page 64, Ape Canyon. Road closed in 2008. Call (360) 247-3900 for road info.
Page 72, Lava Canyon. Road closed in 2008. Call (360) 247-3900 for road info.
Page 87, Siouxon Creek: NW Forest Pass no longer required. Road washed out in early 2009. Call for details.
Page 91, S. Fork Toutle River: For all intents and purposes, this trail is a goner. The road and trailhead were washed out, and the Forest Service tells me they won't even try to fix it again.
Page 95, Trapper Creek: NW Forest Pass no longer required.
Page 106, Bull of the Woods: NW Forest Pass no longer required. Also, for 2008 there was a 30-mile detour in reaching the trailhead, due to road damage. Call (503) 630-6861 for up-to-date conditions.
Page 113, Serene Lake: NW Forest Pass no longer required. Also, road to trailhead is getting rougher; high clearance essentially required.
Page 134, Cooper Spur: NW Forest Pass no longer required.
Page 138, Elk Meadows: Bridge over Clark Creek has been rebuilt. Early-season crossing of Newton Creek can be sketchy. Phone number for info is 503-622-4822.
Page 141: Remove the last paragraph.
Page 143, Lookout Mountain: Forest Pass required at High Prairie TH, not at Gumjuwac.
Page 150, McNeil Point: In driving directions, note that Zigzag Store is no longer called that, at least for now.
Page 158, Ramona Falls: Phone number for info is 503-622-4822.
Page 172, Timberline Lodge: Phone number for info is 503-622-4822.
Page 177, Trillium Lake: Phone number for info is 503-622-4822.
Page 181, Vista Ridge: NW Forest Pass no longer required. Phone number for info is 503-622-4822.
Page 185, Wildwood Recreation Area: Parking fee is up to $5. Also, change reference in Directions from Mt. Hood Info Center to Mt. Hood RV Park.
Page 201, Cascade Head: No dogs allowed on Nature Preserve.
Page 218, Salmonberry River: Remove “Nearby Activities.” Also, know that this trail saw massive flood damage, ending train service and making safety a potential issue for hikers. Use extreme caution. Lower end is reportedly more accessible.
Page 262: Mazamas are on SE 43rd Ave., not NE. (And I’m a Mazama member!)
